'To escape the doom and gloom of the fast-approaching autumn, my friend Anna and I headed out to Franco’s Ristorante in Devizes. Descending the stairs into the basement, we felt as though we could have been transported to Italy.

The restaurant is decorated to emulate an outdoor cafe, complete with murals of rolling hills and Italian sunsets – perhaps a bit kitsch, but I thought it gave a warm ambience. The welcome was very friendly and the service efficient but personal. On hearing me talking about my trip to Italy, where my sister lives, the waitress burst into her native tongue and we had a brief conversation in my pidgin Italian.

For starters, I had avocado tricolore (£6.05), a fresh and beautifully presented dish of avocado, tomatoes and mozzarella cheese, which was looked as good as it tasted. Anna chose the funghi impanati (£5.85) – delicious breaded mushrooms. For the main course, I dithered between pizza which I saw coming out the oven and fish. But in the end I went for the Saltimboca, tenderloin of pork served with Parma ham, sage and Parmesan cheese (£13.85) – which I thoroughly enjoyed. Anna chose the Merluzzo from the specials board (£12.95) – fresh cod with white wine, garlic, capers, oregano and tomato sauce. Both dishes were accompanied by roast potatoes, carrots and broccoli, which were more English than Italian. Nevertheless, the potatoes were crisp and fluffy and the vegetables still had a bit of a bite to them. We also had a side order of bruschetta (£3.25) – delicious garlic bread with olive oil, topped with fresh tomatoes. After this, we only had room for coffee, so no tiramisu.

We would definitely recommend Franco’s for a special occasion, but we thought it a bit pricey at £52.35 for two courses, and a glass of wine and a coffee each, However, it is quality food and much cheaper than a trip to Italy.'
